A memorable fishing outing

A family fishing outing can yield rewards beyond fishing. That happened for Donald Johnston, when he reeled in a nice 3 pound, 14 ounce Spanish Mackerel while fishing for Cobia at the Turtle Rip in Broad River on May 31.

Donald, son of Glenn and Ramona Johnston of Lady's Island, caught this nice Spanish using "greenies." Dad and son marked the day as memorable while Ramona has a great shot for the family album.

A Note From Don Hammond

South Carolina saw its best dolphin fishing the third week of April and first part of May when one strong front was followed by the next. This left few days when boats could get out on the ocean.

Reports from South Carolina also suggest schools of small dolphin are showing up with increased frequency.

We can only hope that there will also be some big dolphin accompanying these schools.

The latest results from the year-round fishing tournament can be seen in the graphic running inside the column.

Angler information is as it was received and as listed the most current. If you have any comments or corrections please email Frank Gibson at ASpalthoff@insuranceserv.com.

Tackle Tip

I am often asked my preference for leader material when offshore fishing. This is best left tothose that do this for a living -- the Charter Captains and Crew (Riggers). Wally Phinney provided this answer long ago and it still stands as the general rule of thumb.

Single Strand wire provides the greatest protection for toothy gamefish and rough bottom. Single Strand wire also has the smallest diameter. However, it also has more of a tendency to crimp. Once a bend is made, the wire is greatly weakened.

On the other hand, larger diameter stranded cable leader material has less abrasion resistance but is more resistant to kinking. It's really a matter of personal preference.

I have known Captains that swear by one, only to swear at their crew when it is used. Use what you have confidence with and stick with it unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

Till next week,

Good fishin'

Lee
